New York.– X owner Elon Musk denied this Wednesday that the artificial intelligence (AI) tool of his social network, Grok, has generated images of naked minors, after the appearance on the platform of images of people – especially women – in underwear and bikinis without consent.
“I am not aware of any images of naked minors generated by Grok. Literally none,” Musk wrote on his social network.
The also CEO of Tesla and founder of SpaceX said that Grok only generates the images that users ask it for and that “it will refuse to produce any illegal content, as Grok’s operating principle is to obey the laws of any country or state.”
“There may be times when a cyberattack on Grok’s instructions produces unexpected results. If that happens, we fix the error immediately,” he adds.
International Measures Against the Misuse of AI
Musk’s statements come amid increased scrutiny from both the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom.
Brussels described the appearance of non-consensual sexually explicit deepfakes on X as “illegal”, “atrocious” and “repugnant”.
This month, X Premium subscribers began using Grok to generate non-consensual images of people in their underwear, a disturbing trend that led users worldwide to call for greater restriction of the tool and the removal of generated content.
Amidst the growing trend of Grok creating images of people in bikinis or scant clothing, on January 2nd, Musk participated in the controversy by posting a photo of himself in a bikini.
Musk asked Grok to modify an image of someone in a bikini generated by AI to look like him, a request that the tool executed without problems.
“Perfect,” Musk wrote on his social media after seeing the result of the AI.
However, on January 3rd, Musk stated that “anyone who uses Grok to create illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they uploaded illegal content,” in response to a post about inappropriate images.
The company’s security team posted a similar message, warning that it takes action against illegal activity, including child sexual abuse material.
California joins the investigations
In addition, California Attorney General Rob Bonta opened an investigation this Wednesday against xAI for the proliferation of non-consensual sexually explicit material.
«The avalanche of reports detailing the sexually explicit and non-consensual material that xAI has produced and published online in recent weeks is shocking. This material, which shows naked women and children and in sexually explicit situations, has been used to harass people on the internet,» the prosecution reported in a statement.
The investigation follows the numerous reports that have been published in recent weeks in which Grok users “take common images of women and children available on the internet and use them to represent them in suggestive and sexually explicit situations, undressing them, all without their knowledge or consent,” explained Bonta.
For his part, California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, supported this investigation into the tech giant and stated that the social network X “is a breeding ground for predators to spread sexually explicit and non-consensual AI deepfakes.”
