Elon Musk releases Grok’s programming tool: now anyone can use it to build applications

Elon Musk and his company xAI took an unexpected turn in the artificial intelligence competition by releasing the code for Grok Build, their AI-assisted programming tool. Since July 15, 2026, any user can access the full, open version of this development agent, without cloud-imposed restrictions and with the ability to run it locally. This decision comes after weeks of questioning regarding the company’s privacy and data handling.

Grok Build, originally introduced in May 2026, is a coding assistant that works directly from the terminal and uses the Grok 4.5 model, released on July 8 of the same year by xAI. The tool allows for reading, editing, searching, and executing code with the support of artificial intelligence, and integrates an extension system that includes plugins and sub-agents. Up until its opening date, it could only be used as a cloud-connected service, subject to usage limits and the direct involvement of the company’s servers.

The measure of opening the code responds primarily to privacy concerns expressed by users and security specialists. Researchers detected that previous versions of Grok Build synchronized entire repositories, including private data, to cloud servers without the explicit consent of the users. This triggered a wave of criticism and questioning regarding data security in sensitive environments or those with proprietary code.

Musk’s response and data deletion

Faced with the controversy, Elon Musk assured that “absolutely nothing will remain,” in reference to the data stored by the company. The promise was resounding: all data previously uploaded by users was permanently deleted and cloud data retention was disabled for the future. This action sought to restore the trust of developers and users affected by the leak.

The publication of the source code for Grok Build on GitHub, under the repository “xai-org/grok-build”, allows anyone interested to examine every line of the agent, modify it according to their needs, and ensure that their projects will not leave their local environment. The release includes the agent’s core loop, all code interaction tools, the user interface, and the complete extension system.

What changes for users

The decision to open the tool and allow its local execution implies two major innovations: enhanced privacy and elimination of usage limits. By running Grok Build on their own equipment, developers can work with confidential code without the risk of information being transferred to external servers. Furthermore, the usage restrictions previously applied by xAI from its cloud infrastructure disappear. Now, the only limit is the capacity of each user’s own hardware.

The company also reset usage limits for all users, fixing an over-quota issue that had caused many to reach their caps earlier than expected. Since June, xAI had unified the limits into a single weekly quota shared across all its products, eliminating daily caps per service.

Competition in the programming assistant market

The move by xAI comes as the coding assistant market intensifies. Tools like Claude, from Anthropic, and Gemini, from Google, are advancing in capabilities and penetration within the developer environment. OpenAI, for its part, maintains a strong presence with solutions integrated into enterprise workflows. By removing barriers to entry and opening the code, xAI seeks to differentiate itself and gain ground in an increasingly competitive segment.

Andrew Milich, head of the Grok Build project, highlighted that the release of the code in Rust aims to offer an auditable tool that is adaptable to the specific workflows of each developer. This allows users to verify the platform’s behavior and confirm that no data leaves their machine

The new model allows users to audit and modify the operation of Grok Build according to their needs.

Next steps for the developer community

Those who have experienced usage restrictions in recent months have already had their quotas restored and do not need to take any further action. For developers working with sensitive information, the opening of the code presents an opportunity to examine and adapt the tool with complete transparency. The GitHub repository, “xai-org/grok-build”, is presented as the new starting point for those who wish to adopt or modify Grok Build in their processes.

Although the release of the tool does not erase the data synchronization incident or the impact on the trust of part of the community, the publication of the code and the total deletion of previous data mark a concrete response. The future of transparency at xAI will be evaluated by the community starting from this step.
