Verón, La Altagracia.– A Haitian citizen died during an immigration control operation carried out in the Villa Playwood sector, in Verón, Punta Cana, following an incident in which a lieutenant colonel of the General Directorate of Migration (DGM) was injured and fired at the foreigner, according to the institution.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, July 22, around 4:00, while agents were carrying out immigration interdiction duties in the area. According to the official report, the foreigner allegedly attacked the officer leading the patrol with a machete.
The DGM explained that the soldier suffered wounds to an arm and a hand while trying to protect himself from a blow that, according to the official version, was aimed at his head. Faced with the aggression, the lieutenant colonel used his service weapon and fired two shots that struck the attacker.
Both were taken to a health center. The Haitian citizen arrived alive at the emergency area, but later passed away due to the wounds caused by the gunshot impacts. Meanwhile, the officer received medical attention and underwent surgery for the injuries caused by the machete.

The General Directorate of Migration reported that the soldier was placed at the disposal of the Public Ministry for the corresponding investigations and that his identity will be withheld during this stage of the process.
