Santo Domingo.– Although he is currently part of the coaching staff for the Nicaraguan national team, Dominican coach Luis Matos stated that his greatest professional aspiration is to one day manage the Dominican Republic national basketball team.
After the match in which the Dominican team defeated Nicaragua, Matos stated that his time with the Central American team represents an opportunity to continue growing as a coach, but made it clear that his long-term goal is linked to the country where he was born.
“It is a new experience for me as a coach. I want to grow and one day be the manager of our country’s national team,” he expressed.
The former member of the Dominican national team’s coaching staff explained that he accepted Nicaragua’s proposal to continue developing on the sidelines and contribute to the growth of basketball in that nation.
“They called me and I like basketball, I like to help. Nicaragua is a country that is starting to develop this sport, but over time it will reach an important level,” he commented.
Matos, who also wore the Leones de Santo Domingo jersey during his playing career, revealed that so far he has not been approached to rejoin the national team programs in the youth categories.
“No, but I am always available to help my country and I will always do so with great pride. Now I have the opportunity with Nicaragua,” he maintained.

The coach also took advantage of his return to the country to highlight the remodeling of the Palacio de los Deportes Virgilio Travieso Soto, the venue where he played during his time as a basketball player.

“This is beautiful, it looks like an NBA arena. After so many years, it’s a pleasure to see this transformation and the happiness of the people,” he stated.
Upon saying goodbye, Matos reiterated the desire that, he assures, has remained intact for years: to wear the colors of the Dominican Republic once again, this time from the bench.
“I will always be available for my country and one day I want to be the manager of the Dominican national team“, he concluded.
