Dajabón.– The National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI) began work to adapt the riverbed of the Dajabón River (Masacre), at its mouth towards the Saladillo Lagoon, an intervention aimed at restoring the natural course of the tributary, protecting agricultural production, and recovering the water flow towards that important ecosystem.
The Director of Operations and Irrigation Systems Conservation at INDRHI, Juan Carlos Nova Méndez, explained that the work is being carried out in coordination with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, after the floods recorded in recent years caused heavy sedimentation that diverted the river’s course into an agricultural drainage.
“With this work, we seek to restore its channel to once again feed the Saladillo Lagoon in an orderly manner, while at the same time protecting the entire productive area of this zone,” stated Nova Méndez.

He also reported that around 5,000 tareas of land are currently affected, while a similar amount will be able to return to production once the river returns to its original course. He added that the intervention will allow for faster water drainage during floods, reducing the risk of flooding and preventing crop losses.
The official highlighted that this adaptation constitutes the first stage of a comprehensive project for the Dajabón River, which also includes the construction of gabions at the most vulnerable points to prevent future flooding in agricultural areas. He specified that the work is being carried out with specialized equipment from the PARHIDRO project, intended for the Yaque del Norte basin and surrounding areas.
Likewise, he explained that the institution waited for the rainfall to decrease in order to intervene in the area safely and reiterated that during the execution of the work, no extraction or use of materials is carried out, but only the removal of accumulated sediments and the shaping of the lateral protection walls.
