Government reactivates PRODEVAJ to boost agricultural production in Pedernales

Pedernales. The Ministry of Agriculture reactivated the Juancho Valley Agricultural Development Project (PRODEVAJ), an initiative aimed at strengthening agricultural production in the Southern region and guaranteeing food supply for the tourism growth that the province is experiencing.
During the relaunch event, the Minister of Agriculture, Francisco Oliverio Espaillat, reported that the project will have a direct impact on some 80,000 “tareas” of crops and will benefit more than 100,000 inhabitants of the area.
As part of the actions to reactivate PRODEVAJ, the official swore in Luis Terrero as the new project administrator and delivered one thousand coconut and soursop plants to local producers, with the purpose of diversifying crops and encouraging more sustainable agriculture.
Espaillat highlighted that the Government seeks to turn the agricultural production of the Juancho Valley into the main food supplier for the tourism projects being developed in Pedernales, reducing the need to transport products from other regions of the country.
“We can produce here the food that tourism development will demand,” the minister stated, noting that items such as plantain, cassava, banana, and eggplant can be grown in the area to supply the local market.

The relaunch of PRODEVAJ responds to requests made by agricultural producers, who were demanding greater institutional support, infrastructure improvements, and actions to reactivate the valley’s productivity.
With this initiative, the Government reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the agricultural sector, food security, and the sustainable development of the Southern region, integrating rural production into the economic growth driven by tourism in Pedernales.
