Santiago.- Luisa Guzmán’s defense team lashed out this Friday against the Public Prosecutor’s file and asserted that their client remains deprived of liberty solely for being the wife of Héctor Lora, the main defendant in the case of alleged irregularities detected at the Cibao Regional Oncological Institute (IORC).

Lawyer Pantaleón maintained that Guzmán never held positions at the Oncology Center, was not an employee of the institution, and never had access to or control over public funds, which is why he described her inclusion in the judicial process as unjustified.

“Luisa Guzmán is imprisoned for being the wife of Mr. Héctor Lora. She had no connection to the Oncological Institute, did not manage public funds, nor did she perform any duties within that entity,” he declared.

The defense also rejected the accusations related to a foundation linked to the case and asserted that it is a legally constituted entity, with a commercial registry, health permits, a physical address, a board of directors, and bylaws, denying that it was used as a shell structure to divert resources.

As explained, the organization provided real and documented services, so during the trial stage they will submit evidence to demonstrate that their operations were carried out within the legal framework.

Pantaleón also questioned the magnitude of the figures presented by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, stating that the accusation attributes an alleged handling of more than 3 billion pesos, an amount that in his opinion far exceeds the resources managed by the Oncology Institute itself.

“The file mentions 3 billion pesos when the institution handled nearly 800 million audited during the administration of Mr. Héctor Lora. Those figures do not correspond to reality and will be debated in court,” he stated.

The statements were offered while the knowledge of judicial measures against those involved in the so-called Operation Onco-14 continues, an investigation through which the Public Ministry pursues an alleged network that allegedly diverted resources intended for the care of cancer patients, accusations that the defense insists on describing as exaggerated and lacking support in the case of Luisa Guzmán.
