Caracas.- The opposition leader and 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate,
María Corina Machado, called for a
demonstration this Sunday in more than
120 cities around the world, including
Venezuela, in support of political prisoners and “persecuted” in the South American country.
“
They and their families need our voice, they need our strength and that is why we will raise our voice, this Sunday, May 3, so that the whole world hears the cry for freedom, for justice, for democracy, which we raise today from Venezuela“, Machado underlined in a video published on his social networks.
The opposition leader has been outside Venezuela since last December, when she left to receive the Nobel Peace Prize medal in Norway after spending a year in hiding to avoid being arrested by the authorities, who have accused her of violence and of calling for a military invasion.
Machado’s organizing team, the Comando Con Venezuela, set more than 20 concentration points in several Venezuelan cities, according to several publications on their X account.
Calls for applications in other countries
In Caracas, one of them will be the headquarters of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin), known as El Helicoide, where numerous political prisoners remain or have been detained.
Also, there are 12 calls in Spain in places like Madrid, Tenerife, Valencia and Barcelona.
Countries such as Italy, Portugal, Belgium, Netherlands, France, as well as the United States, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Panama, Ecuador, Uruguay, Colombia, Peru and others are also included.
According to the NGO Foro Penal, in Venezuela there are 454 political prisoners, including 41 foreigners or those with dual nationality, while a law of amnesty limited to certain crimes and specific periods of time remains in force in the country.
The Venezuelan government often claims that there are “political prisoners” in the country, while asserting that they are incarcerated for committing crimes, a position rejected by various non-governmental organizations and opposition parties.
