María Trinidad Sánchez. – A specimen of mesoplodon, a cetacean belonging to the Ziphiidae family, was found dead on the shore of Playa Grande, in the municipality of Río San Juan, María Trinidad Sánchez province.
The discovery caught the attention of residents, visitors, and local authorities, as it is a rare species on the coasts of the area.
According to preliminary reports, the animal appeared stranded lifeless on the beach, generating curiosity among the community members who approached the place to observe the cetacean.
The mesoplodon is part of the ziphiid family, a group that brings together around 14 species of beaked whales. These marine mammals are known to inhabit deep waters and are rarely sighted near the coast, which makes their presence in Playa Grande even more unusual.
