Miami.- Lionel Messi returned to the pitch following the passing of his father when he came on as a substitute at the start of the second half of the Leagues Cup match between Inter Miami and León, where the American team is winning 2-1.

Messi left for Argentina last Saturday due to the passing of his father, Jorge Messi, at the age of 68, and returned to activity with his team today after missing the last Leagues Cup match, which ended in a 1-2 defeat against Monterrey.

His appearance on the bench was a surprise, since the ’10’ had not rejoined training since his trip to Argentina.

Messi received a huge ovation from the Inter Miami fans, and took to the field despite not having warmed up during the break with the rest of the substitutes.

The ’10’ dedicated an emotional message on Instagram this Wednesday to his father, in which he expressed his pain over his passing, shared what it was like to play in a World Cup for the first time without him, and questioned whether he can continue playing soccer for much longer.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do without you, I don’t know how to go on. I only played soccer and now I have quite a few doubts that I will continue doing it for much longer. You were by my side from the beginning, there was so little left until the end. Why didn’t you hold on for that little bit more and we would have finished together?”, wrote Messi, 39, on the social network.

Inter Miami needs to win by a large margin today and have several Major League Soccer (MLS) teams lose between today and tomorrow to reach the knockout stage of the Leagues Cup.
