Ministry of Agriculture activates Contingency Plan for agriculture in the face of possible effects of Melissa

The Ministry of Agriculture activated its 2025 Contingency Plan as a preventive measure against the possible effects on agriculture and livestock of tropical storm Melissa, with the aim of protecting food production and mitigating the impact of this climatic phenomenon on rural areas.

The Vice Minister of Production and Marketing, Eulalio Ramírez, urged all agricultural producers, sector officials, and related actors to remain attentive to the information issued by the Emergency Center and to strictly comply with the protocols established by the Ministry of Agriculture, with the aim of minimizing losses and activating the corresponding preventive measures.

The activation of the plan responds to the institutional commitment to safeguard food security and guarantee the continuity of agricultural and livestock activities in the face of extreme hydrometeorological events. The Plan establishes early warning protocols, inter-institutional coordination, and rapid response to reduce risks and damages in the eight agricultural regions of the country.

Among the measures considered are permanent climate monitoring, the activation of regional risk committees, the dissemination of alerts through official channels, and coordination with organizations such as the COE, the CNE, and Civil Defense. The plan also includes specific actions to protect crops, livestock, agro-industrial infrastructure, and livelihoods in vulnerable areas.
