Petro will receive a lifetime pension upon leaving the Presidency of Colombia

Bogotá, Colombia.– On August 7, 2026, with the inauguration of Abelardo de la Espriella as president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro’s term will officially conclude. From that date on, the former president will be eligible to receive the lifetime pension that Colombian legislation grants to former presidents.
In accordance with current regulations, this benefit is equivalent to 100% of the monthly allowance received by congress members. With the current salary structure, the monthly payment is estimated at around 51 million Colombian pesos, including the special service bonus.
However, if that salary component were to no longer be part of the calculation, the pension amount would be reduced to approximately 34.7 million pesos per month.
