The authorities of the electricity sector convened this Wednesday the Fault Committee of the National Interconnected Electrical System (SENI) to report the preliminary details of the blackout that occurred on February 23rd, which affected the national electricity service.

During the session, preliminary information from the system was analyzed, and the corresponding protocols were activated to accurately determine the causes of the event and establish the necessary measures to strengthen operational stability and security.

Preliminary findings indicate that on Monday, around 10:50 a.m., a fault occurred in the transmission line on the Hainamosa–Villa Duarte section, which triggered the automatic activation of the protection mechanisms of the national electrical system, designed precisely to preserve the integrity of the system in the face of disturbances.

As part of the immediate actions, the authorities analyze technical information, review protection parameters, and prioritize greater safety margins in operational programming, in accordance with current regulations.

Furthermore, a new working session was agreed upon for next March 11, where the preliminary results and the corresponding measures will be presented.

The authorities in the electricity sector reiterated that the process is carried out under strictly technical criteria and in accordance with the regulatory framework, guaranteeing transparency, rigor, and responsibility in determining causes and eventual responsibilities.

The meeting of the Fault Committee of the National Interconnected Electrical System was attended by the Superintendency of Electricity, the Ministry of Energy and Mines, the National Energy Commission and the Coordinating Body of the Electrical System. It was also attended by electricity distribution companies, the Dominican Electric Transmission Company (ETED) and electricity generating agents.

The authorities stated that they will rigorously monitor this process and that, in the event of non-compliance with regulatory provisions, they will proceed in accordance with the law, applying the corresponding sanctions. The public will continue to be informed in a timely manner about the results of the analysis and the actions arising from this investigation.
