San José.- The Nicaraguan Army seized 1,381 kilos of drugs, including cocaine and marijuana, in the last 12 months, during which 80 people allegedly linked to the shipments were also captured, its chief, General Julio César Avilés, reported this Wednesday.
In an Army report released on the occasion of the 47th anniversary of its constitution, General Avilés said that with those 1,381 kilos of drugs seized in the last year, the total amount of drugs seized since the year 2000 exceeds 199,000 kilos.
Also, he assured that through its operations against drug trafficking, Nicaragua manages to divert more than 800 tons of drugs annually “that do not circulate through the national territory, since they pass by sea and air more than 500 miles away from our coasts“.

Nicaraguan authorities maintain that they are executing a strategy they call a ‘Containment Wall,’ which aims to prevent the circulation of drugs or money linked to drug trafficking in population centers, and they maintain “close ties of cooperation” with countries in the region, as well as the United States, Mexico, and Russia.
Nicaragua is geographically located in a high-traffic corridor for drugs produced in South America that are then transported to North America, where Mexican cartels primarily operate and the main consumers reside.
