Santo Domingo, D.N. – The Pedro Henríquez Ureña National Library was the setting for the presentation of the book “The Haitian Character in Dominican Narrative” by researcher Ibeth Guzmán. This work, edited by Isla Negra of Puerto Rico, proposes a critical reading of the representations of the Haitian immigrant in Dominican literature.
The event featured a prominent main table composed of figures from the academic and cultural fields, including Jorge Asjana David, former vice-rector of teaching and candidate for rector of the
Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD); Bartolo García Molina, who gave the main presentation; Ligia Amada Melo, former Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology; Edwin Paraison, former consul of Haiti in the Dominican Republic; Julio Ferreira, academic vice-rector of the
Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM); Rafael Peralta Romero, director of the National Library; and José Mármol, philosopher, poet and National Literature Prize winner.
The program began with the opening remarks by Marivell Contreras. Subsequently, Rafael Peralta Romero offered the institutional welcome, followed by an intervention by Jorge Asjana David, who contextualized the work within contemporary humanistic research. The main presentation was given by Bartolo García Molina. The event concluded with the author’s words of thanks.
Teachers and students from various universities, especially UASD and PUCMM, attended the event, showing the great interest generated by the analysis of the historical and cultural links between the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The notable attendance of the academic and general public was highlighted as a sign of commitment to critical thinking and intercultural dialogue promoted by the work of Guzmán.

About the author
Ibeth Guzmán is a writer, teacher, and university researcher, as well as a corresponding member of the Dominican Academy of Language. She completed a Doctorate in Spanish Studies, Linguistics, and Literature at PUCMM. She has published the short story books “Tierra de cocodrilos” (2012), “Yerba mala” (2015), and “Tiempo de pecar” (2017). For more than a decade, she was the author of the literary critical commentary column “Qué leer” in the newspaper Listín Diario. Currently, she directs the virtual space Diálogo Académico, dedicated to the discussion of important topics in academia and culture.
