Three police officers and an Army captain are injured after being stoned during a protest in San Juan de la Maguana
San Juan.-The National Police Headquarters reported that three police officers —including two women— and a captain of the Dominican Republic Army (ERD) were injured after being assaulted during a demonstration against the exploitation of the Los Romeros gold mine, in San Juan de la Maguana.
According to the preliminary report, the day began and was developing peacefully; however, in its final phase, a group of individuals —currently in the process of identification— threw stones at the security personnel stationed in the area, especially female police officers, to preserve public order.
Among the injured are two female police officers, a male officer, and an Army captain.
The attacks against the officers occurred without any reason, motive, or circumstance.
Authorities are investigating whether these events were caused by people infiltrated in the demonstration.
The National Police specified that firearms were not used during the incident. Instead, the acting units used tear gas and water cannons with the aim of dispersing the aggressors and preventing them from continuing the violent acts.
Furthermore, material damage was reported, including the breakage of the windows of a police unit stationed near the Sabaneta Dam, where the protest was taking place.
The institution in charge stated that it had deployed preventive reinforcements in the area, with the purpose of guaranteeing the safety of the demonstrators and preventing disturbances of public order.
The authorities reiterated that ongoing investigations are underway to identify and bring to justice those responsible for these acts.
