The University of the Caribbean (UNICARIBE) and the National Commission for the Defense of Competition (ProCompetencia) have formalized an institutional alliance aimed at promoting academic cooperation, the development of joint initiatives, and the strengthening of a culture of free competition as a pillar for the country’s economic growth and sustainable development.
The event, held at the UNICARIBE campus, brought together academic authorities, representatives of the public sector, students, and members of the university community in a day that reaffirms the commitment of both institutions to the training of professionals capable of contributing to the strengthening of national competitiveness.
The opening of the activity was led by the rector of UNICARIBE, Dr. Ricardo Ramírez Mendoza, who highlighted the importance of strengthening ties between academia and the institutions responsible for promoting public policies that positively impact the country’s economic development. Subsequently, the chancellor of UNICARIBE, Dr. José Alejandro Aybar Martín, and the president of the Board of Directors of ProCompetencia, Lic. As a central part of the event, the President of the Board of Directors of ProCompetencia, María Elena Vásquez, delivered the lecture “The importance of free competition for the economic development of the Dominican Republic,” in which she addressed the role that free competition plays in creating more efficient markets, boosting innovation, increasing productivity, and generating greater opportunities for consumers, businesses, and investors.
During his speech, Vásquez explained that promoting competition strengthens market confidence, incentivizes business efficiency, and fosters a more dynamic economic environment—essential elements for increasing the country’s competitiveness and attracting investments that drive sustainable growth.
The conference allowed attendees to reflect on the importance of building a culture of competition from university education, promoting principles of transparency, equity, and good practices in professional and business practice.
Within the framework of the activity, the platform for the Diploma in Competition Law was also presented, an academic initiative that seeks to offer specialized training in this area of knowledge, expanding training opportunities for professionals interested in market regulation and the promotion of competition. The presentation was led by Lucy Méndez, Director of E-Learning at UNICARIBE.
With this alliance, UNICARIBE reaffirms its commitment to developing academic initiatives that respond to the challenges of the national and international environment, strengthening ties with strategic institutions to contribute to the training of professionals with an ethical, innovative vision committed to the economic and social development of the Dominican Republic.
