The government of Donald Trump has already chosen the diplomat who will be Delcy Rodríguez’s political counterpart from the US Embassy in Caracas. It is Laura Dogu, who previously served as ambassador to Nicaragua and Honduras, during the current administration of the leftist president Xiomara Castro, one of the great allies of Chavismo on the continent.
Despite the barrage of insults she received in Tegucigalpa, Dogu presented herself as a conciliatory ambassador, a specialist in navigating very turbulent waters. “She’s very yuca (crack). Extremely moderate and conciliatory, she will never respond to an insult. She doesn’t fit into that denomination of imperialist ambassador,” sources in the political circles of the Central American capital confirmed to EL MUNDO.
Dogu has also served as a foreign policy advisor to General
Dan Caine, Chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a key man for Donald Trump in his strategy for Venezuela. To her knowledge of Central America with her previous missions, she also adds her time as number two in the Embassy of Mexico City.
“She is not confrontational, yes, decisive and solid, she always tried to mediate in the political conflict in Honduras.
Different from other more hostile US ambassadors. The role that the US played inside Honduras was very important, even more so now in Venezuela. She knows how to lower tensions internally,” confirmed to EL MUNDO Mario Serna, creator of Honduras Verifica.
Dogu thus positions itself as the weighted counterpart within the roadmap set out from Washington, where the Rodríguez brothers occupy the pinnacle of political power: the acting president Delcy in the executive area and her brother Jorge, responsible for diplomatic negotiations.
