Santiago. A collegiate court in this city sentenced a woman to 20 years in prison after finding her guilty of torturing and committing physical and psychological abuse against her two minor children, aged 3 and 5.
The sentence was issued by the judges of the Fourth Collegiate Court of Santiago, who accepted the evidence presented by the Public Prosecutor’s Office during the trial against the accused, whose name was omitted to protect the identity of the victims.
According to the indictment, the woman committed acts of torture, barbarity, physical violence, and psychological abuse against her children, in addition to threatening them with death.
The evidence presented by litigating prosecutor Jenniffer Rodríguez and collected during the investigation by prosecutor Leomaris Payamps, of the Comprehensive Care Unit for Victims of Gender-Based Violence, Domestic Violence, and Sexual Offenses, was decisive for the court to establish the criminal liability of the defendant.
After analyzing the material, documentary, testimonial, and expert evidence, the judges ordered that the convicted person serve the sentence at the Rafey Women’s Correction and Rehabilitation Center in Santiago.

The woman was convicted for violating articles 309-2, 303-3 and 303-4, numerals 1 and 4, of the Dominican Penal Code, modified by Law 24-97 on Gender Violence, as well as articles 396 (A and B) and 397 of Law 136-03, which protects the fundamental rights of children and adolescents.
According to the file presented by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the events took place in a sector of the north of Santiago de los Caballeros in 2023, when the now-convicted woman allegedly sent text messages to her ex-partner in which she threatened to take the life of the daughter they both had in common.

The indictment further states that the woman sent recordings in which she allegedly struck the minor on different parts of her body and attempted to suffocate her with her hands.
Likewise, the file indicates that the convicted woman allegedly caused a burn on one of the girl’s legs using a match, while the incident occurred in the presence of her other minor child.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office highlighted that the sentence reaffirms the commitment to prosecute and punish cases of violence against children and adolescents.
