Abinader receives the new driver’s license that returns to state control

Santo Domingo,.- President Luis Abinader received this Thursday the first issuance of the new driver’s license, starting a new stage in the national licensing system, aimed at strengthening road safety, transparency and the technological modernization of the service. The new document was delivered by the executive director of the National Institute of Transit and Terrestrial Transportation (INTRANT), Milton Morrison, in a meeting that takes a significant step towards the transformation of road mobility in the Dominican Republic, according to a note from his office.

Morrison highlighted that this transformation returns control of the system to the State and raises the standards and security of the service. With this modernization, the country replaces the previous model, in force for 20 years, after a public bidding process in which the Consorcio Mobility ID was awarded, a company with operational experience in registration, personalization and reliable issuance of personal documents. The new license is made of high-security polycarbonate, personalized by laser engraving, and incorporates microtext, holograms, invisible inks and UV printing, significantly raising the document’s protection levels, assured Intrant. The system integrates advanced biometrics (ABIS) to validate the driver’s identity and consolidates a centralized unique history, with auditable records that strengthen transparency. Also, digitized theoretical and practical exams are incorporated, with objective and verifiable processes that reduce discretion and strengthen the credibility of the licensing process. “This is not just a format change, it’s the consolidation of a safer, more auditable, and transparent system, which strengthens road safety and generates benefits for the country without increasing the cost for citizens,” Morrison affirmed. The new model will allow for streamlining the driver licensing process, expanding its social reach, and moving towards more responsible mobility, through the progressive incorporation of over a million motorcyclists who currently do not have a license, the strengthening of their training, and contributing to the reduction of road accidents. Morrison highlighted that this modernization not only impacts security, but also the efficiency of the State, as it is a model that improves service, expands national and international coverage, and will generate economic benefits for the country exceeding 1,000 million pesos.
