Cabrera Ulloa: US support for the country remains “intact” despite DEA office closure

Santo Domingo.– The president of the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD), José Manuel Cabrera Ulloa, stated this Monday that the support of the United States to the Dominican Republic in the fight against drug trafficking “remains intact” despite the recent temporary closure of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) office in Santo Domingo amid an internal investigation for alleged corruption. The closure of the office, announced on February 12th by the United States ambassador to the country, Leah Francis Campos, “has not and will not affect cooperation or the joint fight against drug trafficking” between both countries.

“The United States’ support for the Dominican Republic remains intact,” he added in statements to the press. In other news, Cabrera Ulloa stated that “there is no evidence” of the possible presence in the country of branches of Mexican criminal structures. These statements from the official come after the death of El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), in Mexico, following an operation, which resulted in blockades, burning of vehicles and clashes, forcing the activation of an extraordinary security scheme with the participation of the Armed Forces, the National Guard and state authorities, particularly in Jalisco and other surrounding areas.
