Faces That Don’t Forget: Call for Justice After the Jet Set Tragedy

Santo Domingo.– Amidst tears, hugs, and banners filled with pain, dozens of family members of the victims and supportive citizens marched on the afternoon of this Sunday, answering the call of the Jet Set Justice Movement, to demand clear and timely answers for the tragedy that marked the country on the dawn of April 8, 2025. The demonstration recalled the fateful moment when, while merengue singer Rubby Pérez was livening up the night, the roof of the emblematic Jet Set disco suddenly collapsed, causing the death of 236 people, more than 180 injured, and leaving dozens of children orphaned. During the walk, the family members insisted that “justice cannot be bought with money“, and demanded that the judicial process proceed in accordance with the magnitude of the events. In their opinion, the tragedy cannot be reduced to delays or lenient measures.

Upon arriving at the National Palace, the protesters held a symbolic stop to demand justice and deliver a letter addressed to the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, in which they express their frustration at what they consider a slow judicial process lacking the firmness that the case demands.

In turn, family members recounted how their lives changed forever from that night. “Nothing will ever be the same,” they repeated, while asking the judges to act with impartiality and responsibility, warning that this case must not go unpunished. They also reported that a hearing is scheduled for January 30 at 9:00 a.m., in which the Espaillat brothers will request a new expert assessment. The judicial meeting will take place in the Palacio de Justicia de Ciudad Nueva, under the watchful eye of family members who assure they will not rest until justice is served.
