Free and on duty was Army sergeant sentenced to 10 years for homicide of a man

Santo Domingo.- The Public Ministry reported that it arrested a military officer sentenced to 10 years in prison for the death of a man, in an incident that occurred on September 29, 2023, in the Arroyo Hondo sector of the National District. Despite the sentence, issued in March of this year, the officer was free and on duty.

According to a press release from the prosecuting body, the soldier was identified as Reynaldo Cordero Santana, a sergeant major in the Dominican Republic Army (ERD).

Cordero Santana was arrested at the headquarters of that military institution, at kilometer 25 of the Duarte Highway, in the Pedro Brand municipality, Santo Domingo province.

The capture was executed by the Fugitive, Rebel, and Convict Capture Unit (Ucaprec), under the direction of prosecutor Andry de los Santos, in compliance with arrest warrant number 249-01-2026-SAUT-00533, issued by judge Franny Ml. González Castillo, of the Sentence Execution Court of the Judicial Department of the National District.

According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the arrest seeks to comply with sentence number SCJ-SS-26-0368, which is final and irrevocable, issued on March 31, 2026, for the death of Michael Jorge.

As indicated in the note, the sentence was handed down by the Second Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Dominican Republic, which imposed a 10-year prison sentence on the defendant after finding him guilty of violating articles 59, 60, 295, and 304.II of the Dominican Penal Code.

The file states that Luciano José Berroa Nina, known as “Viejo” or “Viejebo”, acted in complicity with Sergeant Major Cordero Santana to kill the victim, who was on Paseo de los Arroyos street, in the Perantuen neighborhood, in the Arroyo Hondo sector, at the time of the incident.

The National Institute of Forensic Sciences determined that Jorge’s death was caused by a firearm projectile wound, classifying the case as a homicide.

For this fact, Berroa Nina was also prosecuted, who last year was sentenced to serve 20 years in prison at the Najayo Men’s Correction and Rehabilitation Center, in the San Cristóbal province.
