Two Dominican men sentenced for attack on off-duty Border Patrol agent in New York

Two Dominican men have been sentenced to federal prison for their roles in a violent robbery in Manhattan in which an off-duty U.S. Border Patrol agent was seriously wounded by gunfire.

Miguel Francisco Mora Núñez, 22, was sentenced Monday to 15 years in prison by U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska in federal court in New York. Mora Núñez pleaded guilty earlier this year to a federal weapons charge.

The judge imposed the maximum sentence allowed for the offense. Mora Núñez also faces a separate case involving attempted murder, in which he could receive between 25 years and life in prison, according to the report.

The second Dominican, Christhian Aybar-Berroa, 23, was sentenced to 12 years and seven months in federal prison for his role as an accomplice in Mora Núñez’s escape on a motorcycle following the robbery in July.

According to federal prosecutors, both men were in the United States illegally and are expected to be deported after serving their sentences. They pleaded guilty to illegal possession of ammunition.

Prosecutors said Mora Núñez entered the United States through Arizona in April 2025. Police sources cited in the report said he had previous arrests during his time in the country, including allegations that he assaulted a pregnant woman and threatened to kill another immigrant with a machete.
