A 16-year-old Russian teenager suffered extensive damage to both lungs after using electronic cigarettes for two years, according to the Kuzbass Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital in Russia’s Kemerovo region.
The teenager was initially admitted with pneumonia. A month after being discharged, however, his condition deteriorated and he was hospitalized in intensive care after his blood oxygen saturation fell to 65%, compared with the normal range of 95% to 100%.
A CT scan led doctors to diagnose a vaping-associated lung disease, reportedly the first such case identified in a minor in the region. Following adjustments to his treatment, the teenager’s condition improved and he no longer requires supplemental oxygen, although he remains hospitalized in a specialized unit.
