Las Américas Airport begins operations on alternate runway

Santo Domingo.- Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI, S.A. (Aerodom) informed this Wednesday of the start of operations on the alternate runway 18-36 of the Las Américas International Airport, José Francisco Peña Gómez (AILA), as part of the plan to guarantee operational continuity during maintenance work on the main runway, 17-35, to be carried out in the coming months. The first aircraft to make use of the new configuration was a Frontier Airlines flight bound for San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Since then, “all operations have been carried out without incident, in strict compliance with operational safety standards,” Aerodom stated in a statement. The alternate runway has been enabled through the adaptation of the old Juliet taxiway, a project executed by Aerodom in coordination with the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC) and other authorities in the sector. The process included technical studies, infrastructure improvements, installation of runway lights, leveling of the safety strip and new signage, ensuring that the runway complies with all national and international regulations, the note pointed out.
