Taylor Swift announced that she will release her new single, “Patient Zero,” on September 25, two days before the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, where she has nine nominations and will receive the inaugural Artist Director Honors.
Swift made the announcement on Instagram, sharing a photo and confirming that the song will be available across digital platforms.
Hours before the announcement, Swift had launched a countdown on her website. Following the reveal, the site shifted to a gray background featuring a leafless tree, marking a change from the aesthetic used during the countdown. She is also promoting special-edition collector’s CDs.
Swift will receive the first Artist Director Honors at the MTV VMAs on September 27 in Los Angeles. The new award recognizes artists who have developed notable careers directing their own audiovisual projects. Swift is also the second-most nominated artist this year, with nine nominations, behind Madonna.
