Extreme sports athlete Ryan Bean performed a more than 100-foot (30-meter) jump from a glacier in Alaska’s Knik River Valley, executing a double gainer before plunging into freezing water below 40°F (4°C). The stunt was carried out in collaboration with the extreme sports franchise Nitro Circus.
Because of the remote terrain, the team used a helicopter to reach the top of the glacier and deployed a rescue boat to pull Bean from the water immediately after the jump. The murky water also limited the visibility of emergency divers to about one foot.
Despite the risks posed by the impact and freezing water, Bean completed the maneuver and emerged unharmed. The stunt has been described within the cliff-jumping community as one of the most extreme double gainers ever performed.
