New York suspends parking restrictions this Monday, but maintains fines

Drivers in New York City, including thousands of Dominicans, will have a temporary easing of parking rules this Monday, October 12, for the celebration of Columbus Day. However, authorities will maintain fines for other parking violations.
The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) has suspended the alternate side parking system, known as Alternate Side Parking (ASP), which requires vehicle owners to move their cars from certain streets to facilitate cleaning efforts.
The provision will be in effect throughout the day in Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island, which will allow drivers to keep their vehicles parked in spaces usually restricted by street cleaning schedules.
However, the suspension does not represent a general authorization to leave vehicles anywhere, as other parking regulations and parking meter fees will remain in effect.
Parking and parking meters
One of the aspects that residents must take into account is that this Monday’s holiday does not include the suspension of parking meter payments. Therefore, those who use these spaces must comply with the established rates and schedules.
Likewise, prohibitions on double parking, in front of fire hydrants, in spaces reserved for emergencies, and in areas where traffic signs prohibit stopping or leaving vehicles will remain in effect.
This means that drivers may receive fines if they violate any of these provisions, even though restrictions related to street cleaning are suspended.
When will the restrictions return?
The official Department of Transportation calendar states that alternate side parking rules will resume on Tuesday, October 13, unless authorities announce any further modifications.
This Monday’s suspension is in response to municipal provisions for certain holidays, during which vehicles are permitted to remain parked on streets where they are usually required to be moved for cleaning operations.
Parking: official recommendations
To avoid fines, drivers can check official information through the NYC 311 portal, where updates on parking, restrictions, and traffic changes are published.
Authorities recommend checking traffic signs before parking, especially in residential and commercial areas with specific regulations.
The measure coincides with the celebration of Columbus Day, a date recognized as a federal holiday in the United States and which is also commemorated in different places as Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
