Trump announces 25% tariffs for India along with penalties for trading with Russia
Washington.– The president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced this Wednesday the imposition of a 25% tariff from August 1 on imports from India, along with a penalty for maintaining commercial ties with Russia despite the sanctions.
“Although India is our ally, over the years we have done relatively little business with them because their tariffs are too high, among the highest in the world, and they have the strictest and most unpleasant non-monetary trade barriers of any country,” the president wrote on his Truth Social network.
Trump insisted that the Indian Government “has always bought the vast majority of its military equipment from Russia, and they are the largest buyer of ENERGY from Russia, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE”.
“ALL OF THIS IS NOT GOOD!” warned the president, who added that because of this, starting in August, India “will pay a 25% tariff, plus a penalty for the above”, referring to its trade relations with Moscow, in a message in capital letters true to the style that the New Yorker usually uses on social media.
In another post on the same platform, Trump highlighted that the U.S. has “a huge trade deficit with India”.
The president’s announcement comes after he assured weeks ago that his government was close to reaching a tariff agreement with New Delhi, and amid frustrations over what the Republican sees as an “insufficient commitment” from Russian President Vladimir Putin to advance negotiations to end the conflict in Ukraine.
Since his arrival in power last January, Trump has intensified the trade war against his partners, to whom he has imposed tariffs of between 15% and 50%, which, as he has insisted, will come into effect on August 1st, when the tariff truce he granted to his counterparts to negotiate new taxes ends.
