Trump says he could “involve” María Corina Machado in Venezuela’s future

Washington.- U.S. President Donald Trump stated this Tuesday that he might “involve” the Venezuelan opposition leader, María Corina Machado, in the future of Venezuela.

The Republican leader made this statement during a press conference on the occasion of the first anniversary of his return to power and after the meeting he held last week at the White House with Machado, who presented him with the medal of his Nobel Peace Prize.

“An incredibly kind woman did something extraordinary a few days ago. Maybe we can involve her somehow. I’d love to be able to do it. Maria, maybe we can do it,” she stated. Trump expressed himself in these terms after stating that Venezuela previously sent the United States its “drug traffickers and prisoners”, a situation that changed after the capture of Nicolás Maduro. “I was against Venezuela, but now I love Venezuela”, Trump said, who added that he has been “working very well” with the new Government of the acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, ex-vice president of Maduro and who took power after his overthrow. The president explained that oil companies are preparing to make “massive investments” in Venezuela, a country that “has more oil than even Saudi Arabia.” On January 3rd, U.S. forces deposed Nicolás Maduro during an attack in Venezuela that resulted in the capture and transfer of the Chavista leader and his wife, Cilia Flores, to New York, where both face charges of drug trafficking. Trump then announced that his country would govern in Venezuela and subsequently backed the new Government of Delcy Rodríguez, assuring that it is complying with all of Washington’s demands, including access to the Venezuelan oil sector. So far, the United States has excluded Machado from the transition process, considering that he does not have enough internal support to lead the country.
