Christa Pike is “angry and confused” after surviving failed execution, lawyer says

Christa Pike, the Tennessee death row inmate who survived a failed lethal injection on September 30, is awake but reportedly angry and confused about what happened, according to her attorney. “She is very aware that the state tried to execute her,” her lawyer said.

Pike remains hospitalized with pneumonia, a blood clot and severe swelling in her arms that has left her unable to move them, according to the account. She is also reportedly shackled to her hospital bed.

Her case has raised questions about what happens when a death row inmate survives an execution attempt. Tennessee law does not provide a clear procedure for such a situation, leaving uncertainty over the next steps.

The governor has ordered an independent investigation into Pike’s case and canceled the only other lethal injection scheduled in Tennessee for the remainder of the year.
