Charros de Jalisco defeat Tomateros and secure their spot in the semifinals
Zapopan, Jalisco .With impeccable relief pitching and timely offense, the Charros de Jalisco (Mexico Red) once again prevailed over the Tomateros de Culiacán (Mexico Green), this time with a score of 4-2, to seal their classification to the semifinals of the Caribbean Series Jalisco 2026, in the duel that closed the penultimate day of the preliminary round at the Pan American Stadium.
The Jalisco bullpen was the key to the triumph by pitching seven scoreless innings and striking out nine, supporting a collective performance that allowed the hosts to achieve their third victory in four matches, thus closing their participation in the regular season.
The victory went to Luis Márquez (1-0), while Matt Foster earned the save (1). The loss went to starting pitcher Faustino Carrera (0-1).
The Tomateros took the lead in the first inning against Ronald Medrano, when Carlos Sepúlveda reached base by hit by pitch, advanced to third with a single by Allen Córdoba and scored thanks to a sacrifice fly by Rodolfo Amador.
The Charros’ reaction was immediate. In the bottom of the same inning, they tied the score after two outs, with consecutive hits from Michael Wielansky, Willie Calhoun, and Mateo Gil.
In the second chapter, Reynaldo Rodriguez put the locals ahead with a home run to left field, but Culiacán responded with consecutive doubles by Córdoba and Amador to tie the game. In that action, Medrano had to leave the game due to an injury.
The decisive run came in the fifth inning. After one out, Julián Ornelas singled to center, advanced to second on a balk by Carrera, stole third base already facing reliever Braulio Torres, and later scored thanks to a wild pitch.
On the offensive for the Charros, in addition to Rodríguez’s home run, Michael Wielansky stood out, batting 4-2 with one RBI and one run scored. Mateo Gil and Willie Calhoun each contributed a hit and received two walks. For Tomateros, Allen Córdoba hit three hits, including a double, while Rodolfo Amador drove in two runs.
Medrano worked two complete innings, allowing two runs and three hits. The relief was covered by César Gómez (2.1), Luis Márquez (0.2), Jesús Cruz (2.0), Gerardo Reyes (1.0, 3K) and Matt Foster (1.0).
By Culiacán, Faustino Carrera pitched 4.1 innings, allowing three runs, five hits and striking out four. He was followed by Braulio Torres-Pérez (0.2), Norman Elenes (1.0), David Gutiérrez (1.0) and Wilmer Ríos (1.0).
In the first game of the day, Leones del Escogido defeated 16-15 to Federales de Chiriquí, in the game with the most runs scored in the history of the Caribbean Series. Emailin Montilla (1-0) took the victory, Enrique Saldaña (0-1) took the loss and Jimmy Cordero achieved the save (3).
After these results, Leones del Escogido leads with 3-0, followed by Charros de Jalisco (3-1), Tomateros de Culiacán and Cangrejeros de Santurce (1-2), while Federales de Chiriquí close without victories (0-3).
The qualifying round will conclude this Thursday with the duel between Federales and Cangrejeros at 2:00 p.m., and the night match between Leones del Escogido and Tomateros de Culiacán at 9:05 p.m.
