SANTO DOMINGO.– The Administrative Minister of the Presidency, Andrés Bautista García, was appointed as president of the Organizing Committee for the 50th Superior Basketball Tournament of the National District (TBS Distrito 2026), an edition that will mark the “Golden Anniversary” of the capital’s premier basketball championship.

The information was provided this Monday by Edwin Castillo (Tatico), president of the National District Basketball Association (Abadina), who highlighted that Bautista enthusiastically accepted the responsibility of leading the organization and setup efforts for the sporting event.
The tournament is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, August 18, and will feature the participation of the traditional franchises San Lázaro, San Carlos, Mauricio Báez, El Millón, Rafael Barias, Huellas del Siglo, Bameso, and Los Prados.
Castillo explained that Bautista’s appointment was unanimously approved by the Abadina Executive Committee and the delegates of the participating clubs, highlighting the official’s career and his historic support for Dominican sports.
“We are highly honored by Minister Bautista’s acceptance to head the Organizing Committee for the 2026 District TBS, as we are aware of his love for sports and basketball, and that he will lead us to the long-awaited success in our 50th anniversary,” expressed Castillo.
For his part, Andrés Bautista stated that he takes on the challenge with great commitment and enthusiasm, with the goal of guaranteeing a successful celebration of the traditional district superior tournament.
The 2026 edition will also have the appeal of being held once again at the traditional Virgilio Travieso Soto Arena, which is currently undergoing renovations and will bear the name Virgilio Travieso Soto “BanReservas” Arena.
The organizing committee will also be composed of the Minister of Sports, Kelvin Cruz, and the president of the Dominican Basketball Federation (Fedombal), Rafael Uribe, who will serve as vice presidents.
Also forming part of the organization will be Stalin Alcántara, vice-mayor of the National District; deputy Melina Sánchez; and José Augusto Castro, delegate of the eight participating clubs.
Likewise, Abadina previously confirmed the appointments of Nelson Ramírez as tournament commissioner; Claudio Méndez as administrative director; and sports journalists Américo Celado and Odalis Sánchez as directors of Communications and Press.
