Liranyi Alonzo conquers silver in athletics at the Junior Pan American Games

ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay. – The Dominican delegation added a new medal this Tuesday in the II Junior Pan American Games of Asunción thanks to the sprinter Liranyi Alonzo, who won the silver medal in the 100-meter dash of athletics.

Alonzo crossed the finish line in 11.40 seconds, only surpassed by Shanique Bascombe, from Trinidad and Tobago, who took the gold with 11.19. The bronze went to Puerto Rican Frances Colón, with 11.46. “It’s not the result I expected, but I feel good about the work done. Now to focus on the next competition with the aspiration of reaching the top,” Alonzo expressed after the final. The silver medal of the Creole sprinter represents the fourth medal for the Dominican Republic in Asunción (two silver and two bronze). In the semifinal, Alonzo had shone by recording 11.08 seconds, a time that constituted a new record for the Junior Pan American Games, surpassing the previous mark of Frances Colón (11.32, Cali 2021). The athlete will return to the track this Wednesday in the 200-meter dash semi-final, an event in which she will seek revenge after having been disqualified for lane infringement in the Cali 2021 edition.

Men’s Volleyball

The Dominican men’s volleyball sextet was eliminated from the fight for medals after losing 3-1 to Argentina, accumulating a record of 0-3 in the preliminary phase. The partials concluded 25-12, 20-25, 25-12 and 25-19 in favor of the South Americans. Malik Britton led the Dominican offense with 17 points, followed by Adrián Figueroa (14), Ronny Molina (10) and Moisés Ortiz (9).

Beach Volleyball

In the women’s tournament, the Dominican duo Yary Cleto Rosario / Crismil Paniagua was eliminated after falling 2-0 against Bolivia. They finished with a record of 0-3 and will play for consolation positions (13 to 16). In the men’s category, Rolvin Maldonado / Ramón de Jesús were also out of medal options after suffering their third defeat, this time 2-0 (21-9, 21-18) against Costa Rica.

Speed skating

In skating, José Luis Santos finished in tenth position in the second qualifying heat of the 500 meters + individual distance, with a time of 47.078.
