Flood alerts issued across eastern New York as powerful storm moves into New England

Dangerous flooding is affecting eastern New York as torrential rain continues to fall, while a powerful storm moves toward New England a day after triggering water rescues and major transportation disruptions across the northeastern United States.

Slow-moving downpours have drenched eastern New York, including the Albany area, for several hours, prompting multiple flash flood warnings across the Hudson Valley. Rainfall totals have reached between 2 and 6 inches in some locations.

Video from CNN affiliate WRGB showed vehicles stranded in floodwaters in Guilderland, outside Albany, where several roads were closed due to flooding. The footage appeared to show a man rescuing a child from one vehicle and helping another person wade through waist-deep water.

More than 11 million people were under flood alerts on Wednesday, stretching from eastern New York into western New England. The highest flood risk is centered over parts of Massachusetts, Vermont and Connecticut, where forecasters warned of the potential for torrential rainfall capable of causing dangerous flash flooding.
