Berlin.- At least one person died and 15 others were injured this Saturday during the LGBTI Pride Day celebration in a multiple hit-and-run incident involving a vehicle whose driver fled the scene after abandoning the car used against participants of the event held in the center of Berlin.
“Around 22:00 (20:00 GMT) a car entered the Tiergarten from Lennéstrasse, injuring several people. We currently have fifteen injured and one person has died,” a police spokesperson explained to the media at the scene.
The police spokesperson explained that the officers are looking for “potential suspects” responsible for the hit-and-run.
There is a large police presence deployed in the area used today by thousands of people to celebrate LGBTI Pride Day, which was suspended.

The celebration of LGBTI Pride Day in Berlin
Berlin celebrated its LGBTI Pride Day this Saturday with a march in which local authorities expected the participation of hundreds of thousands of people.
“We have the participation of several hundred thousand people, just like in previous years,” a Berlin Police spokesperson indicated earlier to EFE, on a sunny day with summer temperatures that will reach a maximum of 28 degrees, according to the weather forecast.

Under the motto ‘Haltung is hot’, which can be translated as “taking a stand is attractive”, 83 floats and 55 walking groups were scheduled to parade for this year’s event.
In Berlin, the LGBTI Pride Day march is known by the acronym CSD, which stands for ‘Christopher Street Day’.
Those initials refer to the name of Christopher Street in the New York neighborhood of Greenwich Village, the scene of protests in the summer of 1969, following a police raid, considered one of the milestones of the gay rights movement.
