Santo Domingo. Dominican prospect Juan Céspedes wrote his name into the minor league record books by becoming the first player to steal eight bases in a single game since at least 2005, during the Dominican Summer League Angels’ 9-1 victory over their opponent.

Céspedes, just 17 years old, surpassed the previous record of seven stolen bases that Johan De Los Santos had set in August 2025. The young Dominican achieved the feat despite recording only one hit and drawing one walk in four plate appearances.

The speedy player began his historic performance by drawing a walk and subsequently stole second, third, and home to score the first run of the game. Later on, he continued to wreak havoc on the bases, taking advantage of every opportunity to add steals and constantly put pressure on the opposing defense.

During the fourth inning he added two more steals and, after connecting for his only hit of the game in the sixth inning, he stole second and third base again before scoring another run to complete an unprecedented performance.

The young prospect’s performance confirms the enormous potential the Angels possess in one of their most interesting international promises. Signed for a $300,000 bonus during the 2025-26 international period, Céspedes has already accumulated 25 stolen bases in just 27 attempts during the start of his professional career.

In addition to the minor league mark, the Dominican’s performance even surpasses the modern Major League record, where the legendary “Sliding Billy” Hamilton stole seven bases in a game played in 1894.

At just 17 years old, Juan Céspedes continues to establish himself as one of the young figures to watch within the Angels’ development system and Dominican baseball.
