Santo Domingo.– The
National Association of Retired Employees of the IDSS requested President
Luis Abinader an increase in the minimum pension and a staggered salary adjustment for pensioners in the public sector.
The request was formally submitted this Wednesday at the
National Palace by leaders of the entity, headed by
Alejandro Figuereo Cuello, president of the organization, and
Omar De Los Santos, secretary general.
Representatives of the pensioners pointed out that the increase in the cost of living has made the economic situation of thousands of older adults who currently receive a minimum pension of RD$10,000 difficult.
“
We recognize that the president unified the minimum pension in the past, but that figure has been devoured by the cost of the Quintile 1 family basket, which already exceeds RD$28,400 monthly”, they expressed during the delivery of the document.
Among the proposals presented by the association is to raise the minimum pension to RD$20,000 per month.
Likewise, they propose a 20% readjustment for pensioners who receive between RD$20,001 and RD$40,000, as well as a 10% increase for those who receive pensions exceeding RD$40,001.
The entity maintained that the measure would benefit about 177,000 pensioners in the distribution system, who, according to them, face difficulties in covering basic food and medication expenses.
“We ask President Abinader to marry glory and do justice to this passive class that gave their lives in service to the country,” the organization expressed in a statement.
The request was filed as part of the claims of pensioners and retirees who demand better economic conditions in the face of the rising cost of living in the Dominican Republic.
