Santo Domingo East.– Public transport drivers, private motorists, and pedestrians who use the Las Américas highway daily requested this Tuesday that authorities reinforce police patrols on that road, after reporting that criminals continue to throw stones at moving vehicles with the alleged purpose of causing accidents to then rob the victims.
Citizens stated that the situation has generated fear among those who travel along the highway, especially during the nights and early morning hours.
“More surveillance is needed here. You go out to work without knowing if you will return home safely because those criminals are throwing stones to force people to stop,” expressed a public transport driver.
“We cannot wait for a greater tragedy to occur. The police must constantly patrol this area because we are all exposed,” stated another driver consulted.
Likewise, a passerby pointed out that insecurity affects the entire community.

“It is worrying to see that these events are repeated and no one stops them. We want more police presence and for those responsible to be arrested,” he/she maintained.
The complainants called on the National Police and other authorities to implement permanent preventive operations and strengthen surveillance in the areas where these attacks are most frequently recorded.

Drivers’ concern arises after several incidents reported during the last week. The most recent case occurred when a woman of approximately 50 years of age was seriously injured in the face after the impact of a stone that went through the windshield of the vehicle in which she was traveling on the Las Américas highway, also causing an accident. The victim was admitted to a health center.

Following that incident, other drivers reported new stone-throwing incidents in the vicinity of 25 de Febrero Avenue and under bridges along the aforementioned road corridor, warning that the practice has become a constant danger for those who use that important thoroughfare.
As concern persists, drivers and residents insist that increased patrolling and permanent surveillance are urgent measures to prevent new attacks and guarantee the safety of thousands of people who travel daily along the Las Américas highway.
