The mechanization of the Dominican sugar industry has reached historic levels in the last 5 years, rising from 1 to 70 percent, improving its productivity efficiency and eliminating thousands of foreign laborers who were involved in sugarcane harvesting.
The information was received by President Luis Abinader during a meeting he held today with the executives of the country’s main sugar mills at the National Palace, where they reviewed the issues concerning this important productive sector of the national economy.
The meeting was attended by Messrs. José Pepe Franjul Jr., Leonardo Matos, and Eduardo Martínez, on behalf of Central Romana; Benigno Trueba, representing Ingenio CAEI; and Virgilio Pérez Bernal and Jaime Bonifacio for Ingenio Barahona.
President Luís Abinader was accompanied by the Minister of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs, Yayo Sanz Lovatón.
The meeting highlighted the importance of the progress made in the mechanization of sugar production in our country, which has contributed to this industrial sector depending less and less on foreign labor every day.
