Michelle Bolsonaro considers running for president of Brazil in 2026: “It will be the result of prayer and what God wants to entrust to me.”

Brasilia.— With former President Jair Bolsonaro out of the electoral race after being convicted for his involvement in a coup attempt, his wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, is considering the possibility of running as a candidate for the presidency of Brazil in the 2026 elections.

The former first lady, 43 years old, stated that any decision will be made with caution and guided by faith.

“Any decision about possible candidacies will go through a deep discussion with my husband and will be the result of much prayer to discern the mission that God, eventually, wants to entrust to me,” she said.

Michelle Bolsonaro has established herself as the female and evangelical face of the Brazilian right, a sector seeking to reorganize after the political disqualification of the former president. Her name is among the possible successors to the Bolsonarist leadership, along with the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, also considered a strong figure within the conservative bloc.

Meanwhile, Jair Bolsonaro, currently under house arrest after being convicted in September for his role in the attempted coup of 2022, will not be able to compete in the upcoming elections. His absence opens a void in the Brazilian far-right, which is now looking for a new face capable of confronting the likely candidate of the left, the current president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Although she has not yet confirmed a formal candidacy, the possibility of Michelle Bolsonaro heading the candidacy represents a significant move within Bolsonarism, which could bet on a renewed strategy but with the same conservative and religious discourse that has characterized the movement.
