La Vega. — The Minister of Sports, Kelvin Cruz, initiated the reconstruction of the La Matica Club this Tuesday, with an investment of RD$32.8 million, as part of a set of works aimed at strengthening sports infrastructure in this province.
The official announced that the intervention will also include the Clubhouse, with the aim of ensuring a comprehensive renovation of the facilities.
“I can’t come here to paint a piece and then see something ugly behind it. No. When I enter a place, it’s to make a transformation that is visible. And if they didn’t include it in the contract, they will have to include it from tomorrow, because we are also going with the Clubhouse; we are going to touch everything that is necessary so that the change is felt,” Cruz expressed to community leaders and athletes present.
The minister projected that the works will be completed in an approximate period of three months, which will allow the traditional Superior Basketball Tournament of La Vega to be held at the end of the year in optimal conditions.
The Club La Matica is considered one of the most emblematic in Dominican basketball, and its refurbishment will contribute to the sports and social development of the youth in La Vega.
Complementary interventions in La Vega and other provinces
During his visit, Cruz highlighted other initiatives underway and in process that will impact both La Vega and different locations in the country. Among them, he mentioned the construction of the San Juan baseball stadium and the Olimpio stadium in San Francisco de Macorís.
He also reported that works such as the Olympic Center, including the sports arena, are in the bidding process, and that, after Easter, they will begin the rehabilitation work on the Olympic pool in this province.
The official also highlighted the completion of the Constanza multipurpose facility, as well as the interventions on the roofs of Tireo and Jima.
“We continue to work permanently to guarantee decent sports facilities throughout the national territory,” he affirmed.
Authorities assess the impact of the work
The mayor of La Vega, Amparo Custodio; the provincial governor, Luisa de la Mota; and the president of Club La Matica, Julio Burdier, thanked the minister for promoting projects that strengthen youth’s access to adequate spaces for sports and recreation.
Scope of the reconstruction
The project contemplates the intervention of an approximate area of 2,389 square meters, which includes the court, stands, service areas and outdoor spaces.
Among the works to be carried out are the installation of FIBA-approved wooden flooring; the placement of professional scoreboards, digital whiteboard and 24-second clock; and the replacement of seats with high-strength plastic seats.

Similarly, the electrical system will be modernized, the metal structure will be maintained, and an aluzinc roof will be installed; the remodeling of changing rooms, bathrooms, and offices; the construction of new stands with changing rooms; the habilitation of a meeting room and administrative areas; as well as general painting and the placement of perimeter railings.
