Villa Hermosa, La Romana.– The mayor of the Villa Hermosa municipality, Eduardo Familia, led, together with the Minister of Sports, Kelvin Cruz —appointed by the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader— and other authorities, the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the multi-purpose roof for the Villa Hermosa court, a project that will have an investment of RD$31,892,235.90.
The event was attended by local and provincial authorities from La Romana, including municipal mayors, representatives of the sports sector, community leaders, and iconic figures of basketball in the region.
In his words, Mayor Eduardo Familia highlighted the significance of this project for a municipality of more than 150,000 inhabitants. He emphasized the historic struggle of local leaders and young athletes, including members of the Potro de Piedra Linda club, who for years promoted basketball in Villa Hermosa. Likewise, he thanked President Luis Abinader for making this investment possible, considering that the work will dignify the municipality’s athletes who compete at the provincial and regional levels.
For his part, the Minister of Sports, Kelvin Cruz, pointed out that this project is part of the central government’s policy to provide the country’s 160 municipalities with at least one multipurpose roofed facility, noting that currently 28 municipalities still do not have this type of infrastructure.

Cruz explained that the investment, of approximately RD$32 million, will translate into a space for the practice of basketball, volleyball, and other sports disciplines, in addition to becoming a center for social integration for the development of community, cultural, and family activities.
The official also highlighted that investment in sports seeks to keep youth away from vices and promote a healthy lifestyle. As an example of the Government’s commitment to sports development throughout the national territory, he cited the recent inauguration of the Sports Palace, now Arena Banreservas.
With this work, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation (Miderec) and the Villa Hermosa City Council reaffirm their commitment to the sports and social development of the municipality.
