Ministry of Tourism delivers renovated La Caleta Underwater Park with an investment of RD$420 million

La Caleta. – In an act headed by the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, the Ministry of Tourism, inaugurated this Monday the first stage of the reconstruction of the La Caleta Underwater National Park, a work that seeks to boost tourism, rescue the natural heritage and strengthen the recreational and cultural offer of the country.

The total investment in the project amounts to RD$420,231,945, and includes an intervention of 119,925 square meters, including a 2.74-kilometer commemorative promenade to the countries of America and the Caribbean, with the remodeling of the shields located at the exit of the Las Américas International Airport (AILA), in addition to nearly 20 thousand square meters of plazas and internal paths. During the event, Minister Collado highlighted that this work will have a great impact on tourism, especially for visitors arriving and departing the country through AILA, by turning the park into an attractive and functional space.

“Without a doubt, this underwater park, of great historical value, will welcome the thousands of tourists arriving through Las Américas International Airport,” said the official. Likewise, it was pointed out that the park will allow tourists leaving the country to make a final visit to an emblematic space. It indicated that they will be able to enjoy “a beautiful place, full of history and nature” before their departure. The intervention includes the construction of pedestrian paths, parking lots, viewpoints, children’s recreation areas and modules of pergolas for vendors, as well as a service module that will have offices, premises, bathrooms and the presence of Politur, among other facilities. In addition, the work incorporates universal access ramps, lighting, concrete benches, trash cans, signage, landscaping, and parking areas. The landscaping was designed taking into account the conservation and preservation of the existing species in this national park. The project is part of a regional urban planning strategy implemented by the Ministry of Tourism on the southeast coast of the country, encompassing the Santo Domingo boardwalk, Santo Domingo Este, La Caleta, San Pedro de Macorís, and La Romana. The La Caleta Underwater National Park was established in 1986 with the aim of protecting the underwater cultural and biological heritage of the area. Within the park is the Taíno Ethnological and Archaeological Museum, discovered in the 70s, which houses an important collection of Taíno objects. In its seabed is also located the shipwreck of the frigate Nuestra Señora de Begoña, one of the main historical attractions of the place.
