“Public Prosecutor’s Office varies request against Dilcia Vargas Sánchez and requests house arrest in the Onco14 Case”

Santiago.- The judicial situation of Dilcia Isabel Vargas Sánchez, former vice president of the Board for the Fight Against Cancer and ex-wife of Héctor Antonio Lora Cruceta, took a turn this Thursday after the Public Ministry modified its initial request for pretrial detention to house arrest, according to what her lawyers reported upon concluding the coercion measure hearing.

Vargas Sánchez’s legal representatives, Ricardo Reyna and Antonio Falete, explained that during the rebuttal and surrebuttal phase, the prosecution formally changed its conclusions, leaving the decision on the precautionary measure to be imposed on their client in the hands of the judge. Next Monday, June 29, at 7:30 p.m., the judge will read the ruling.

“The Public Prosecutor’s Office changed its request for pretrial detention to house arrest, which represents a significant change in the process. It is now up to the judge to decide whether to accept that request,” stated the defense.

The lawyers indicated that since the beginning of the process, their client has maintained an attitude of cooperation with the authorities, which is why they consider that a less burdensome measure is proportional while the investigations continue.

Likewise, they recalled that this Thursday’s hearing was focused on the rebuttals and counter-rebuttals of the parties, a scenario in which the modification of the Public Ministry’s petition occurred, which had originally requested preventive detention for those involved.

The judge’s decision regarding the coercive measure against Vargas Sánchez next Monday, June 29, will be announced once the deliberation concludes within the framework of Operation Onco 14, a case investigating an alleged embezzlement of millions of pesos intended for the treatment of patients at the Cibao Regional Oncological Institute.
