Santo Domingo.– The Public Ministry will request in the coming hours the imposition of pretrial detention, as a coercive measure, against a man accused of practicing dentistry without a license in La Vega and causing permanent injuries to a patient during a procedure.
The defendant, Franklin José Almánzar Escarramán, 51, performed procedures at the office of his brother, the dentist William Radhamés Almánzar Escarramán, 52, located at the V Centenario Medical Center, on Duarte Street, in that province.
Both were arrested by judicial order, after appearing before the Regional Sub-directorate of the National Police, on charges of illegal practice of dentistry and alleged complicity.
The court prosecutor Aura Luz García Martínez, head of the La Vega Prosecutor’s Office, reported that the Public Ministry will file the request for a coercive measure, guaranteeing due process and respect for the rights of the accused.
According to the investigation, the incident occurred on January 17th, around 10:00 in the morning, when the victim went to the office to receive dental care.

At the location, she was evaluated and subsequently advised to undergo a surgical procedure for the extraction of all four third molars, which was to be performed by Franklin José Almánzar Escarramán, who was allegedly practicing without the proper license.
During the procedure, the defendant administered anesthesia to the patient and, according to the file, performed maneuvers with dental instruments that caused her severe pain and complications.

After approximately four hours without being able to complete the extraction, the patient continued to experience pain and inflammation, which led her to subsequently visit other specialists who confirmed damage resulting from the procedure.
The victim was left with permanent injuries, including facial pain, edema, atrophied nerves, trismus, right mandibular paresthesia, and alveolitis, as stated in a medical certificate dated February 5, 2026.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office indicated that the actions of the defendants could have put the patient’s life at risk, in addition to violating General Health Law No. 42-01 and Law 63-18, which creates the Dominican College of Dentists.
Likewise, he reported that he has evidence linking the accused to the case, including a certification from the Ministry of Public Health stating that Franklin José Almánzar Escarramán does not possess an exequatur.
The case file was provisionally classified as a violation of articles 265, 266, and 285 of the Penal Code, as well as articles 92, 94, 156, 162, 164, and 166 of Law 42-01.
The Public Ministry recalled that, as part of the investigative process, it obtained Judicial Arrest Authorization No. 2026-AJ0051569, issued by Judge Adaías Sánchez Collado, of the Judicial Office of Permanent Attention Services of La Vega.
