The United States officially resumes operations at its Embassy in Venezuela

Washington.- The United States officially resumed operations at its Embassy in Caracas this Monday, after the Donald Trump Administration and the Government of the Venezuelan interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, re-established diplomatic relations between both countries, broken since 2019. “Today we formally resume operations at the U.S. Embassy in Caracas, marking a new chapter in our diplomatic presence in Venezuela,” announced the State Department in a statement. Diplomat Laura Dogu arrived in Caracas last January as chargé d’affaires to lead the reopening of the US mission. The team led by Dogu is currently “restoring the building” to prepare “the return of personnel as soon as possible and the eventual resumption of consular services,” pointed out the State Department, which did not specify the date planned for the return of said services. The announcement comes after, last week, a Venezuelan delegation led by the chargé d’affaires, Félix Plasencia, visited Washington to meet with members of the Trump administration and receive control of the Venezuelan Embassy in the United States, guarded since 2023 by the State Department.

Since the capture of Nicolás Maduro by US forces on January 3 in Caracas, the Trump Administration and the Rodríguez Government have drawn closer and in early March formally re-established diplomatic relations between the two countries. According to Trump, the United States exercises a tutelage over the Rodríguez government, which has complied with Washington’s demands to open Venezuela’s oil and gold sector to US companies. The United States and Venezuela broke off relations in 2019, when the Trump administration, in its first term, recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó, then president of the National Assembly, as interim president of the country. Since then, Washington’s diplomatic efforts have been carried out through the Venezuela Affairs Unit, a temporary office located in the U.S. Embassy in Colombia.
