The United States Embassy in Cairo maintains its normal operations and reiterated to its citizens the recommendation to pay special attention to the news related to military operations in Iran, in a regional context of high tension that could affect security and mobility within and outside of Egypt. According to the alert issued by the diplomatic headquarters, as reported by TravelGov and the Embassy itself, the importance of vigilance and caution is highlighted, especially in the presence of radical actors linked to Iran and the possibility of impacts on flights and border crossings in the coming days. This warning underlines that the security environment in the region continues to be complex and volatile, with the ability to change rapidly depending on the evolution of the conflict. The official travel advisory categorization for Egypt remains at Level 2, which means “exercise increased caution”, with explicit restrictions for North and Central Sinai, as well as parts of the Western Desert, according to the U.S. Embassy in Egypt.

The U.S. Embassy in Cairo reported that “U.S. citizens in Egypt may encounter flight cancellations or delays to destinations affected by the closure of airspace,” a risk that depends on the status of the ongoing conflicts in Iran and surrounding areas, according to the website U.S. Embassy in Egypt. Faced with the possibility of incidents, it is recommended to stay informed and contact the airlines directly to confirm the operability of the flights.

Security Alert Regarding Regional Threats and Risk Areas

Egyptian authorities usually offer effective protection to residents and visitors. However, the alert emphasizes that “extremist groups and actors aligned with Iran have expressed interest in planning and executing attacks within the region,” as stated by the Embassy. These threats focus on potential targets such as “religious places —mosques, churches, monasteries and buses to those destinations—, government buildings and diplomatic headquarters (embassies), tourist sites, transportation hubs, shopping malls and restaurants, foreign and US-associated organizations, resorts, road checkpoints and urban areas of Cairo”. The warning issued by the Embassy recommends exercising extreme caution in the Sinai Peninsula, especially in areas near the Taba border crossing, where travelers are advised to register with Israeli alert systems to receive real-time warnings of potential attacks by actors aligned with Iran or the Houthis against southern Israel. A direct answer summary block for search engines about the situation is as follows: United States authorities maintain their embassy in Cairo and advise their citizens in Egypt to exercise constant vigilance in the face of the evolving conflict in Iran and its regional repercussions, in areas where risks linked to extremist actors and operational flight restrictions persist.

Taba border crossing: requirements, fees and recommendations

The Taba land crossing, on the border between Egypt and Israel, operates 24 hours a day and allows entry for U.S. citizens, who since March 28 can access a free 14-day visa upon arrival, as long as they remain in the Sinai area. This permit is only valid for those who plan to leave Egypt through the same Taba crossing or by flight from Sharm El Sheikh International Airport, without transiting through Cairo.

In case of departure through the border post, including boarding flights from Taba or Sharm El Sheikh, all travelers are required to pay USD 120 in cash as an exit fee, only US dollars are accepted.

Traveling outside of Sinai — including the option of traveling to Cairo — requires obtaining a visa on arrival, valid for 30 days, for a cost of USD 30 in cash, in addition to an additional payment of USD 20 or USD 25 (as applicable) also in cash, for the issuance of a guarantee letter by an authorized travel agent. Passage to other regions of Egypt is permitted with this visa, including flights from Sharm El Sheikh with a stopover in Cairo. The U.S. Embassy in Cairo recommends that each person carry a minimum of USD 175 in cash to cover the visa, the letter of guarantee, and the departure fee, as well as an additional amount for possible contingencies, as ATMs at the crossing frequently fail. Among the priority actions, the United States Embassy suggested enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which grants access to security updates and facilitates contact in case of emergency. In addition, maintaining a vigilant attitude is urged, especially in the Sinai and areas near border crossings and tourist sites. The U.S. Embassy in Egypt advises to “avoid large gatherings and demonstrations, maintain a low profile and follow the instructions of local authorities.”

It was also emphasized the need to modify usual travel routes and schedules, monitor official sources and local media for updated information, and review the validity and copy of travel documents. The official report emphasizes that “the safety of American citizens remains the top priority”. For those requiring emergency assistance, the Embassy in Cairo and the Department of State maintain direct contact channels.
