Washington.- U.S. President Donald Trump announced this Tuesday that his Administration will prohibit the use of federal Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) funds to finance gender-affirming surgeries and hormonal treatments for minors.
“U.S. taxpayers will no longer pay for sex-change surgeries or hormones for children,” said Trump on his official Truth Social account.
Trump said he ordered the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Mehmet Oz, to take action to end federal funding for these treatments.
The policy, which will go into effect on October 13, will prevent Medicaid and CHIP from covering puberty blockers, hormone treatments, and gender-affirming surgeries for those under 18 years of age, while CHIP will stop covering them for those under 19 years of age.

Mental health service coverage for minors with gender dysphoria will indeed maintain federal funding.

The new regulation also includes a transition period for minors who are already receiving hormonal treatments, whose coverage with Central Administration funds may be maintained until April 2027.

Gender-affirming surgeries are rare among minors, while puberty blockers and hormone treatments are more widely used, although their use among non-adults is not limited only to people with dysphoria.

The decision adds to a series of measures promoted by Trump since his return to the White House in January 2025 to restrict gender-affirming care for minors.
His administration had already tried to condition hospital access to federal funds on them ceasing to offer these treatments, while dozens of medical centers have suspended or limited some of these services since his return to power.
